Manchester City have announced that goalkeeper Stefan Ortega has signed a one-year contract extension with the club, keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2026.

The 31-year-old German is Pep Guardiola’s second choice goalkeeper and made 20 appearances across all competitions this season. While Ortega started just five Premier League games, he played a significant role in City’s title victory.

His remarkable one-on-one save against Son Heung-Min in the penultimate Premier League game away at Tottenham Hotspur was decisive for Man City’s fourth consecutive title.

Ortega also started all of Man City’s FA Cup games, including the final against Manchester United. He also made three appearances in the Champions League.

Ortega joined the Sky Blues on a free transfer in July 2022 after his contract with German club Arminia Bielefeld expired. In his two years at the club, the keeper has made 34 appearances, winning two Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and one UEFA Champions League.

“I am delighted to be staying at Manchester City for longer,” the German said.

“This is a football club that provides players with everything we need to be our best. Every single day I feel motivated and challenged, and I have improved as a goalkeeper since coming here two years ago. My family are really settled here in England… I love everything about it here.”

Man City’s Director of Football Txiki Begiristain was extremely pleased with Ortega’s contract extension.

“This is a crucial contract extension for Manchester City,” he said.

“Stefan is the best No.2 goalkeeper we’ve ever had, providing us with quality, stability, and experience.”

City have also tied down third-choice goalkeeper Scott Carson to a new deal, extending the veteran’s stay at the club for another year. With Ederson’s future in doubt, City’s goalkeeping lineup is far from settled as of now.
