Manchester City are in advanced talks to sign Borussia Dortmund center-back Manuel Akanji before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday night. Reports indicate that both clubs are in talks with a deal worth €17.5 million could be agreed upon in due course.
Akanji 27, has not featured for Dortmund this season after falling down the pecking order since the signing of Niklas Sule and Nico Schlotterbeck. He has been at the club since 2018 and made 36 appearances across all competitions last season.
Despite being a regular last season, the Swiss international has entered the last year of his contract at Dortmund. He has been linked with moves to Inter and Leicester with those moves falling through in the last few days.
Pep Guardiola has been evasive in answering the question as to whether any new players could come in before the deadline on 1st September. He has just two fully fit center-backs in John Stones and Ruben Dias, with his other two senior center -backs, Nathan Aké and Aymeric Laporte out injured.
Dortmund Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl has indicated that they expect a resolution before the window closes. He also indicated that it was far from ideal that Akanji’s future was still up in the air so late in the transfer window.
