Manchester City star and England international Kalvin Phillips would not move to Newcastle United this summer. The Englishman wants to fight for his position and continue playing for the most valuable club in Europe.
The former Leeds star had a disappointing season having made only 12 appearances for the club out of which 10 were made as a substitute. The 27-year-old spent most of his time on the sidelines to which Eddie Howe saw as an opportunity for investment.
The Newcastle coach was adamant about signing the midfielder as he looks to strengthen his squad for the coming season. However, he will have to suffer the blow if reports from Telegraph are true of Philips now not wanting to leave the club and fighting for his position with Rodri/John Stones.
The defensive midfielder’s task won’t be easy with Rodri becoming the core of Guardiola’s side. The Spaniard has sealed his position after incredible performances day in and out.
The reports also say that Kalvin Philips is taking inspiration from his teammate Jack Grealish’s first season for the club where even the former Aston Villa star had spent most of his time on the sideline. Fast forward one year and Grealish is a pivotal reason for taking Manchester City to the Champions League final.
Not only Newcastle but a lot of clubs have suffered a blow after Philips’ willingness to stay at the club for the 2023/24 season and turning things around for himself got aired.
A move to a new club especially Newcastle United would have been exciting for Philips where he could have enjoyed confirmed game time and centre stage. The Englishman however is happy to stay at the club and would want to give one more year of a fight for the position.
The English clubs will have to wait for a year more and wish for Rodri to continue dominating the midfield position which will then give them a chance to go all-in for Kalvin Philips after 12 months.
