Manchester City showing interest in Dani Olmo

Manchester City are reportedly interested in midfielder Dani Olmo, who currently plays for RB Leipzig and is representing Spain at the 2024 UEFA Euros. Olmo is having a standout tournament, recently helping La Roja reach the semi-finals with a goal and an assist in their quarter-final victory against hosts Germany.

Pep Guardiola is eyeing potential replacements should Manchester City legend Kevin De Bruyne leave either this summer or next. The Belgian midfielder has hinted at a possible exit, with links to Saudi Pro League clubs. Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich have also been linked to City. While a move for Kimmich appears feasible, acquiring Musiala would be challenging and very expensive.

Olmo is a versatile attacking midfielder capable of playing on the wings. He excels in tight spaces, with good dribbling abilities, a fine first touch, and agility. The Spaniard is also an excellent passer, possessing the vision and technique to unlock even the tightest defences. His defensive contributions are often underrated, with his tackles, interceptions, and clearances per game ranking in the upper quartile among attacking midfielders and wingers. This defensive involvement aligns well with Guardiola’s tactics, which emphasise quick ball recovery, especially in the final third.

However, a move for Olmo is not a priority for City at the moment. The Citizens have a deep midfield roster and are unlikely to pursue Olmo unless there are significant departures. Journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed this stance, stating:

“Man City appreciate Dani Olmo, Man City like the player, he was one of the players they had on the list, for example last summer or two years ago.

“But at the moment, as of now, Manchester City are NOT working on a deal for Dani Olmo… At the moment, the intention of Manchester City is not to advance on this kind of solution, because they are looking at different opportunities, different positions.

“So as of today, Dani Olmo is going to Man City? NO. At the moment the situation is quiet.”

Despite this, significant interest in Olmo could arise later in the transfer window, particularly if several of City’s midfielders depart. Olmo has a release clause of around £50 million in his contract, making him a viable and relatively affordable replacement for De Bruyne.
