Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has cast doubt over the future of goalkeeper Ederson, who has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League throughout the summer. Although Ederson’s contract runs until 2026, reports suggest he prefers a move to Saudi Arabia despite City’s interest in negotiating an extension.
Saudi Interest and Negotiations
Al-Nassr have already made a €30 million offer for the Brazilian, which City rejected. The Citizens are holding out for a fee in the region of €50-60 million. With City’s reluctance to lower their asking price, Al-Nassr have withdrawn from negotiations, but another Saudi Pro League club, Al-Ittihad, is now showing interest, with a bid expected soon.
Guardiola’s Comments
Speaking to Man City writer Joe Bray, Guardiola expressed uncertainty about Ederson’s future, stating, “I don’t know if Éderson will stay. He has to make a decision.” However, Guardiola has also made it clear that he would like the Brazilian to remain at the Etihad Stadium.
“I’d like him to stay but it depends on other clubs. I don’t know the situation. There have been no contacts in the last days. It’s a question of training, being with us until the transfer window finishes and we’ll see,” said Guardiola.
Ederson’s Impact at Manchester City
Ederson has been an integral part of Guardiola’s squad, serving as the undisputed number one goalkeeper for City over the past seven seasons. During his time at Manchester City, Ederson has enjoyed a highly successful career, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four EFL Cups, and one UEFA Champions League trophy.
Individually, Ederson has garnered several awards, including three Premier League Golden Gloves and the FIFA Best Goalkeeper award in 2023. He has also been named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year twice and the IFFHS Team of the Year once.
While Ederson’s departure would be a significant blow for Manchester City, the club remains hopeful of retaining him. If he were to leave, Stefan Ortega is likely to be promoted to the team’s number one goalkeeper. City would then need to bring in a reliable deputy to support Ortega.
