Manchester City are reportedly leading the race for highly-rated Sporting CP midfielder, Matheus Nunes. The 23-year-old has emerged as a midfield target for the Cityzens after reliable Italian transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano reported that Man City would be in the market for at least one new midfielder this summer. Romano revealed that Paul Pogba, Frenkie De Jong and Nunes are all targets. With recent developments in the transfer market, Nunes seems like the most viable option for Pep Guardiola and his men.
Guardiola was impressed with the 23-year-old’s display when City faced Sporting CP and has since admired him ahead of an interesting summer at the Etihad.
After the conclusion of the current season, Manchester City are expected to launch a bid in the region of €40m to secure the Portuguese talent. Sporting are said to be interested in a deal and have an excellent relationship with City. The club would be interested in acquiring one of Man City’s fringe players in a situation similar to the deal that saw Pablo Sarabia join Sporting and Nuno Mendes join PSG.
The player himself believes that he has played his last game for Sporting, with a “step-up” move being the next good move for his career. He has enjoyed good form in a long and tasking campaign. With 5 goals and 4 assists in 50 appearances for Sporting, he has enjoyed his most successful campaign to date with the Portuguese giants. Should the rumours of City’s interest materialize, Matheus Nunes will be a welcome addition to a City midfield that will be depleted with Fernandinho leaving and continuous uncertainty over Ilkay Gündogan whose contract expires in 2023.
