Manchester City are reportedly considering a move for Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich. The 29-year-old, regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world, has yet to agree on a new deal with the German giants. With Kimmich’s contract expiring in 2025, Man City could secure him on a cut-price deal this summer or wait for him to run out his contract with Bayern.

Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg has claimed that Kimmich’s departure this summer or the next is “becoming increasingly likely.” The journalist added that Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Liverpool are the five clubs the midfielder is considering.

Kimmich’s relationship with Pep Guardiola could tip the scale in City’s favor. Guardiola gave Kimmich his debut back in 2015 and has always spoken highly of the midfielder. “He’s always switched on, strong in the air, and confident in possession. I can only pay a huge compliment to Joshua Kimmich – he deserves everything that comes his way,” Guardiola said.

Kimmich made his professional debut for RB Leipzig in Germany’s third division in 2013. After two successful seasons with Leipzig, he joined Bayern Munich for £6 million. Since then, he has cemented himself as one of the elite midfielders globally, making 390 appearances for Bayern in all competitions.

Currently representing Germany at the 2024 UEFA Euros, Kimmich is likely to make a decision on his future once the tournament concludes. With some of City’s star midfielders rumored to be leaving, Kimmich would be an ideal replacement. He possesses all the qualities Guardiola seeks in a midfielder.

Defensively strong, with a stellar work ethic and tactical fluidity, Kimmich shines with the ball. He is an exceptional passer, always composed in possession, and has excellent vision. A midfield pairing of Kimmich and Rodri would arguably be the best in football.

Bayern Munich will likely ask for a fee around £40 million, which is a bargain for such a quality midfielder. If Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva decide to stay at the club for another season, City might delay Kimmich’s move and sign him as a free agent in 2025.
