According to The Athletic, Manchester City may revisit a move for Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes if Julian Alvarez moves to Atletico Madrid.

Pep Guardiola has been keen on adding another holding midfielder to the squad to provide cover for Rodri, with Guimarães being Man City’s prime target throughout the transfer window. However, a move for the Brazilian was deemed too expensive, with Newcastle demanding £100 million for the 26-year-old, who still has four years left on his contract.

After weeks of speculation, Julian Alvarez to Atlético Madrid transfer appears to be nearing completion. Manchester City are set to receive €70 million plus €25 million in potential add-ons. This deal would represent a massive profit for the Citizens, who signed the Argentine for £14 million in 2022.

With this influx of funds, Manchester City will look to replace Alvarez first but may also decide to pursue Guimarães again. Securing him for less than £100 million would be difficult, and Pep Guardiola will need to carefully consider how the midfielder would fit into the team.

Spending £100 million on a player who has the potential to be one of the team’s stars makes sense, but it may not be wise to invest that much in someone who isn’t guaranteed a starting role. Such an acquisition would not only be seen as overpayment for a squad player but could also lead to future conflicts over playing time. Man City should only move for Guimarães if he’s expected to start alongside Rodri.

Guimarães is an exceptional midfielder, known for his dribbling, fine first touch, and exceptional vision in passing. In addition to his playmaking skills, the 26-year-old is diligent in his defensive duties, frequently winning back possession for his team. A midfield pivot of Rodri and Guimarães would arguably be one of the best pairings in the world.

The Brazilian has made 86 appearances for Newcastle, scoring 16 goals and providing 14 assists. While securing his services would be challenging, Guimarães would be a dream signing for this Man City team.
