In a shocking metric that every reader would find hard to believe, Julian Alvarez has overtaken Erling Haaland in goal involvements per minute played.
The Norwegian striker has had an impressive start to the new season having scored 8 goals in 10 matches already with two assists under his name as well. However, his partner Alvarez has outstared him in an unrealistic turn of events.
The Argentine has been involved in 11 goal involvements already this season averaging a goal contribution in 70 minutes. Even in Manchester City’s last win against RB Leipzig, Alvarez proved to be the game changer with 1 goal and assist under his belt.
“I think that’s what amazing about the dressing room. Everyone pushes each other,” said Rico Lewis after the Champions League game when asked about Alvarez’s form.
“We had the best striker in the world last season and now someone is pushing him to be even better and they will keep on pushing each other. When we do that we’re only going to get better as a whole unit and a team. It’s the best selection you can have.
“Julian is a lot more technical with playing in those spaces but then Erling stretches the pitch – even today he takes the defenders back and gives the midfielders more space.”
This does not in any way mean that Haaland has been underperforming as per his standards. The beast is still involved in a goal every 89 minutes and has been scoring for fun like he always does.
It’s the partnership between Julian and Erling that has reaped huge benefits to Man City amidst an injury-plagued dugout.
