EURO 2024: Manchester City semifinals review

Foden-Euro-2024

An overview of the Manchester City players representing their countries at the semi-final stage of the 2024 UEFA Euros. Nathan Ake is the only Man City player to have been knocked out this round, following England’s late victory against the Netherlands.

Spain will battle England in the tournament finale for the coveted Euros trophy. Rodri, City’s sole representative in the Spanish team, will face club teammates Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Phil Foden and will be hoping to be the happiest among them when the full-time whistle is blown.

Rodri had a fascinating midfield battle against French star N’Golo Kante. While the City star had his typical solid game, it wasn’t as dominating a performance as we’re used to seeing by the 28-year-old holding midfielder.

Rodri was excellent in his distribution, completing 92% of his attempted passes but would have hoped to aid his team more in defence, especially with France piling on the pressure as they searched for an equaliser in the second half. The midfielder won only two of his seven duels and made a single tackle in the game.

With Gareth Southgate continuing with his three-at-the-back formation, Walker retained his position as one of the wide centre-backs. He was mostly solid but could have closed Xavi Simons down quicker for the Netherlands goal. Thought he had assisted the winner but the goal was disallowed after the City defender was found to be offside.

John Stones:

A decent outing for the centre-back. He looked good in possession, distributing play well with some nice long balls. Won all of his duels.

Phil Foden:

His best game at the Euros so far. Foden found plenty of pockets of space to exploit and was rather unlucky that he didn’t get on the scoresheet. He was denied a goal by a goal-line clearance, although he should have taken the shot earlier.

He also came close to scoring after a fantastic shot from outside the box but was denied by the post.

Nathan Ake:

A decent game for the inverted fullback. He struggled a bit against the lively Bukayo Saka and Walker but was fairly composed in both defence and possession.
