Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes has been linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium this summer as the Brazilian international seeks a change in scenery amid competition with Stefan Ortega at Man City off late.
THE SHIED PERFORMANCE
Ederson took charge of gloves once again as Manchester City faced Erik ten Hag’s United at Wembley Stadium to kickstart the football season in England as they rubbed shoulders to claim the Community Shield.
While Ederson walked into the game with doubts over his future at the club, he played an important role to ensure that Pep Guardiola’s side started the season with a silverware.
Garnacho opened the scoring in the tie while Bernardo Silva headed off past Andre Onana to equalize for the Cityzens. A stalemate at the final whistle meant that the winners would be decided by a penalty shootout.
However, the pens were a roller coaster ride for the City supporters. Bernardo missed his opening penalty while the Brazilian failed to keep Diogo Dalot’s effort out. The momentum was running towards United when Ederson managed to save Jadon Sancho’s eventual spit-kick to keep his side in the game.
The Manchester City goalkeeper was also tasked with netting the fifth penalty from the spot, which he managed to convert beautifully by sending Onana the wrong side before Evans skied United’s sixth to give City the shield.
Brazilian Keeper Ederson Commits to Manchester City
Coming into the game, Ederson’s future remained blurred. Following City’s pre-season exhibition against AC Milan, Ederson admitted that his future at the club was unclear as links with a possible move to the Saudi Pro League took to the rumour mills.
Which means the game last weekend could have been his last representing the City. However, the player told ESPN Journalist Joao Castelo-Branco after the conclusion of the game that he is going to stay put at Manchester City for the next season. The Manchester City goalkeeper said: “It’s over. I spoke with some players, the coach, the director, everyone. I talked to my family, and it was a joint decision. We’ll stay more years at City.”
“The media says many things, sometimes inventing a little more. But I’ve already decided my future, especially after the conversation I had with [Pep] Guardiola. This season, I’m totally focused on City with my teammates in search of more titles.”
Ederson is a senior figure in Pep’s dressing room, and it is great to see that he will continue at the club for next season.
Community Shield was a shining example of his class and quality, aside from his heroics in the shootout. And following his performances last weekend, he would be excited to convert another season into a silverware shower in a Manchester City shirt.
