The transfer saga of Dani Olmo promises to be one of the most exciting ones of the summer. The possibility to land the Spanish star are comparatively low for Manchester City, as Barcelona leapfrogs the Cityzens in landing the player.
Man City’s pursuit of Dani Olmo ends as Barcelona secures deal
Dani Olmo joined RB Leipzig in 2020 on a 3-year contract, which was later extended until 2027. The 26-year-old had played really well for the German club last season. With 25 appearances last season, he managed to score 8 goals and 5 assists. Though the midfielder possesses talent and skill, his fitness has been a concern throughout his career.
As Matheus Nunes and Kalvin Phillips could leave the Etihad, Pep Guardiola plans to sign a midfielder. Olmo’s performance for Spain in the Euros 2024 has caught the attention of many clubs.
Manchester City’s number of signings this summer is relatively low, with only one signing so far, Savinho, the winger. A few players from the academy have played well for the Blues during the pre-season, and Pep might consider promoting some to the main squad.
Olmo’s future lies in Barcelona, not Manchester
Barcelona showed interest in signing Olmo and Nico Williams from the very beginning of the summer. With Lamine Yamal already in the squad, the addition of the Spanish duo could strengthen the team. Currently, Olmo is set to join Barca this summer, as the club has reached an agreement until 2030 with the player and has offered a whopping £54 million to RB Leipzig. Despite Barcelona’s financial challenges, they look set to make this expensive purchase.
Pep Guardiola has a stack of midfielders such as Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, and Julian Alvarez in his squad, providing ample talent to handle the game.
Signing Olmo could have been a serious mistake, as he has missed many games for both the club and country due to various injuries. It is neither a loss nor a win for the Blues, as they have plenty of talent in the squad waiting to express themselves this season.
