Manchester City confident in retaining key players

Manchester City stars Kevin De Bruyne and Ederson have been rumoured to be leaving the Etihad Stadium throughout the summer, with both players linked to Saudi Pro League clubs. However, according to Sam Lee of The Athletic, Man City officials are confident that their star players will stay at the club for at least another year.

Ederson’s contract expires in 2026, and Manchester City are keen to negotiate an extension. The 30-year-old Brazilian has been an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s squad, serving as the undisputed number one goalkeeper for the past seven seasons.

Besides being an exceptional shot-stopper, Ederson is arguably the best goalkeeper in possession. A fundamental component of Guardiola’s philosophy is building from the back, and Ederson fits this perfectly. His powerful left foot is ideal for launching quick counterattacks with accurate long balls, and his composure on the ball provides a reliable passing option for defenders.

With Ederson likely to stay and Stefan Ortega’s recent contract extension, City are unlikely to pursue another goalkeeper this transfer window.

De Bruyne has also been heavily linked with moves to Major League Soccer or the Saudi Pro League. The 33-year-old addressed these rumours in an interview with Belgian media, saying, “I’ll have a quiet summer. I’ll enjoy my holidays and will return to Manchester City afterwards. I assume there will be talks in the upcoming months.”

“Yes (I’ll stay at Man City). I’ve read a lot of headlines about a transfer but haven’t spoken to anyone. I saw Michael Emenalo (Saudi Pro League Sporting Director) at the Club World Cup. I know Michael – it makes sense to chat. But it wasn’t about that,” De Bruyne added.

While De Bruyne is set to stay for at least another year, the Belgium international will most probably depart at the end of his contract in 2025. By then, he will be 34, making it a suitable time for City to part with one of the greatest players in their history.
