Manchester City are poised to offer Phil Foden a record-breaking contract extension, potentially making him the highest-paid British player in history. Foden’s current contract, valued at £200,000 per week, is set to expire in June 2027. After playing a crucial role in City’s record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title, the Citizens are eager to secure their academy graduate for the long term. The winger is currently on international duty, representing England at the 2024 UEFA Euros.

Born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, Foden rose through the youth ranks at Man City. Expectations were high from the start, with Pep Guardiola including him in City’s matchday squad when he was just 16 years old.

He led the England squad to victory in the FIFA U-17 World Cup held in India in 2017, scoring twice in the final as England defeated Spain 5-2. He subsequently won the tournament’s Golden Ball, awarded to the best player.

Guardiola has consistently praised Foden’s immense talent. In 2019, the Spaniard called Foden one of the brightest talents he had ever managed. “I have said many times in press conferences, but maybe not said it in front of him. Phil is the most, most, most talented player I have ever seen in my career as a manager. He has everything to become one of the best players,” Guardiola stated.

Foden had to be patient early in his career. Despite his extraordinary talent, Guardiola managed the winger’s minutes carefully, primarily using him as an impact player from the bench. After making just three starts in his debut Premier League season, his game time steadily increased.

The 2023-24 Premier League season saw Foden shine as City’s star. The winger scored 19 goals and provided eight assists in 33 league starts. Recognizing his importance to the team, the club is keen for him to extend his contract with a new bumper wage at par with star players like Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne. The proposed contract reportedly offers £375,000 per week until 2030.

With uncertainties surrounding the futures of many key City players, securing Foden to a long-term contract is crucial for the club’s sustained success.
