Jeremy Doku has been impressive since his move to Manchester City, so much so that he has now sparked debates down in Belgium about who is better, him or prime Eden Hazard. Makes me giggle. This was put through in the publication Voetbal Primeur, who covered debates between journalists Filip Joos and Gert Verheyen on a recent appearance on Sporza’s Extra Time.
Doku, who moved to the Blues from Manchester in a €60m deal from Rennes back in the summer is quickly displacing Jack Grealish in Pep Guardiola’s first team set-up. Having said that, he has justified his starting role with some impressive performances stat-ing three goals and further assisting six in 13 games so far in the Sky Blues.
His most spectacular effort came in the weekend’s 6-1 triumph over Bournemouth, in which he had four assists and one goal. He seems to be a potential star in the making, having rapidly adjusted to life under Pep and thoroughly justifying the large fee spent to get him in the summer.
Belgium are watching closely hoping he can repeat his current feats on the international stage. They very much need a replacement for the recently retired Eden Hazard, and it seems the current debate is whether the Manchester City star is better than the Belgian icon.
“Can I be provocative? If Doku maintains this level, no injuries, would you rather have this type than Eden Hazard on the left wing? Is he more modern as a footballer?” Filip Joos asked.
“Eden is better, I think that’s too early Filip, ask me that again in two years,” responded Verheyen.
“It is true, the better players you play with, the better you become. Training with those top players every day, yes, you go along with that.”
